Where can I get some mountain biking shoes?

Sunday, November 29th, 2009

What are some good sites online to shop for mountain biking shoes? Both of the local bike stores near my house have an extremely limited selection of shoes (like three pair each). Performance and Nashbar seem to have a good selection, but never the right sizes. What I’m looking for is a shoe (SPD) that you can get off the bike and walk around easily. I’m not looking for the type of shoe that looks like a road shoe with a little tread. Any help would be appreciated.

Honestly, I would try a few more Local Bike Shops, even if you have to travel a bit. Shoes vary greatly in their geometry, and it’s relatively easy to end up with a pair that doesn’t fit well. At least try them on at the shop, and then if the price differential is huge, consider getting them online.
if you can’t find what you want online at Perf or Nashbar, try REI. Decent selection and they’re having a sale. They are also good to deal with.

How much of a disadvantage is it to get mountain biking shoes instead of road biking shoes for a road bike?

It seems like there’s a lot of disparity from one brand’s shoe to the next, whether the shoes are made for road biking or mountain biking. Some mountain biking shoes seem more comfortable for everyday use or for walking. What’s the downside in getting mountain biking shoes for a road bike?

No disadvantage. They have a definite advantage in that you can walk in them. Hence, for normal riding, they are a much better option. I have had cases where portions of the soles of some mountain biking shoes interfere with some road pedals, so check this out before you buy, or be prepared to do some modifications.

Canadian Rocky Mountains

Monday, November 23rd, 2009

In the fall of 1883, three Canadian Pacific Railway construction workers stumbled across a cave containing hot springs on the eastern slopes of Alberta’s Rocky Mountains. From that humble beginning was born Banff National Park, Canada’s first national park and the world’s third. Spanning 6,641 square kilometres (2,564 square miles) of valleys, mountains, glaciers, forests, meadows and rivers, Banff National Park is one of the world’s premier destination spots.
The national parks Banff, Jasper, Kootenay and Yoho, as well as the Mount Robson, Mount Assiniboine and Hamber provincial parks, studded with mountain peaks, glaciers, lakes, waterfalls, canyons and limestone caves, form a striking mountain landscape. The Burgess Shale fossil site, well known for its fossil remains of soft-bodied marine animals, is also found there.
Officially designated by UNESCO as “World Heritage Site”, this site is to be safeguarded for the future as a testimony to its enduring past.
This 28 minutes documentary is part of the tv-series WONDERS of WILDERNESS and is available on DVD or VHS (Dutch or English version) at WWW.FAUNAFILM.NL

Nature Parks ROCKY MOUNTAINS Colorado

Monday, November 23rd, 2009

NPM-DVD-143 – The Rocky Mountains National Park is one of the most unique and impressive natural paradises in the United States Of America. It covers an area of a thousand square kilometres and was inaugurated in 1915.

The picturesque Bear Lake lies within a forested area and is one of the most popular tourist destinations of the park. At high altitude, several paths such as the Nature Trail lead through the lake’s natural landscape. The idyllic beauty is truly spellbinding and it is not surprising that Bear Lake is the most popular photo shot of the entire park.

It was discovered that twelve thousand years ago prehistoric Indians hunted within the Rocky Mountains. The legendary culture of the Nasazi Indians originated around two thousand years ago and left its traces in what is today the national park.

Alberta Falls in the south of Glacier Gorge is one of the park’s most popular sightseeing destinations where white masses of foaming water race down several levels into the valley below.

The road from Glacier Gorge winds its way in a northerly direction past Glacier Basin and the eastern park entrance close to Estes Park. In this region the Rocky Mountains are at their most beautiful and the landscape in the area of Horseshoe Park is reminiscent of the exciting and colourful Wild West of old.

The vast wilderness in the west of the USA has survived in the Rocky Mountains right up to the present day and is a fascinating tribute to the amazing natural world of North America.
