What are some good small towns in the Rocky Mountains?

Monday, November 23rd, 2009

I’m a writer and I’m writing a story/novel about some rogue vampires… I want it to take place in the Rocky Mountains, and I want some small towns that they can visit/raid/stay in along the way. Thanks!

Leadville, Colorado. This former mining town is located 104 miles southwest of Denver, at an elevation of 10,152 feet above sea level. It’s known as the "Two Mile High City." Its population in the last census is 2,688 people, more or less.
But why not set the story in someplace that you know?

What are the chances of a bear encounter while hiking either Rocky Mountains or Yellowstone.?

Monday, November 23rd, 2009

I am a little weary about going camping out west recently due to the fact of bears mostly. I love to camp and hike, and I want to do it either in the Rocky mountains or Yellowstone. What are my chances of seeing them or encountering them. Any kind of bear that is.

Bears may be seen in Yellowstone March through November. Yellowstone is one of the only areas south of Canada that still has large grizzly bear (Ursus arctos) populations. In 2007, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced that the GYE grizzly bear population segment had recovered sufficient numbers and distribution to be removed from the threatened list. Grizzly bears are usually seen in the open areas. Look for black bears along the edges of trees in the Lamar and Hayden valleys, or among the trees near Mammoth and Tower.
