Inaugural Janna Brimmer
Memorial Draws Athletes
Surprisingly good weather and
temperatures greeted 89 participants at the inaugural Janna Brimmer Memorial
mountain bike races and trail run, held in Salmon on September 16-17. The event
was round nine of the 2006 Boise Co-Op Wild Rockies Mountain Series and pulled participants
from as far away as Florida, and Michigan, and of course, a number of Salmon
area athletes. The weekend featured a mountain bike cross-country event and a
trail footrace on Saturday, along with a concert/fundraiser featuring the band
Tripsetter from Las Vegas, at the Sacajewa Center. A dual trials competition
was also staged at the Saturday night concert, followed up with a bicycle
downhill race held on Sunday above town near the old landfill and jeep
hillclimb.
The event was round nine of
the 2006 Boise Co-Op Wild Rockies Mountain Series, and was sponsored by the
Boise Co-Op, Duke Speed, Larry Miller Subaru, Moto Tech, Vitamin Water, Wired
Energy Drink, MBT Shoes, the Boise weekly, KIVI Television, J105 Radio, The X,
Bandanna Running, Bikes 2 Boards, Reed’s Cycles, Power Cordz, Dirt Dart, Lou’s
Fox Wear and Cyclone Sports Wear.
The men’s trail run was
topped by Karl Stuber from Waterford, Michigan who flew around the 5-mile
course in just over 44 minutes, topping local runners Lou Binik and the top
female runner, Norma Staaf. The pro men’s cross-country mountain bike field was
headed by Boise rider Jon Gould, who covered 25 miles (5 laps) in 2:08:28, the
fastest time of the day, and Boise’s Lorien Lightfield. The quickest, 3-lap
sport riders were Missoula’s Garland Thayer and Boise’s Naya Antink, and
heading the 2-lap beginners was Ketchum’s Doug Niedrich and Boise’s Ashley
Lloyd.
The new sport of dual trials
continued at the Sacejwea Center on Saturday evening. Conceptualized and created by Wylie Fuhrimann and Brad Duke, the
course featured close-contact, side-by side racing and included a roller ramp,
a 3-foot drop, and a finish line jump. The winner was Boise’s Art Widmar, with
Missoula’s Tom Vineyard finishing second.
Sunday’s downhill utilized
the steep, short canyon above Salmon, next to the old landfill and was designed
and built by a local crew led by Todd Duke. The .4 mile route lost 500 feet of
elevation and used a number of drops and wooden ramps to descend down to the
base of the old jeep hillclimb. It also employed a “best two of three-run
format” which allowed everyone plenty of time on the hill. Boise’s Art Widmar
was again unstoppable setting the fast time of the day with a 1:23.00.
The 10th and final
round of the 2006 Boise Co-Op Wild Rockies Series will be the Bogus to Boise
Banzai, held near Boise, Idaho on October 8.
