High on Permaculture in the Rocky Mountains

By Mike on March 25, 2010, 2:50 am

Peak Moment 156: Kris Holstrom’s off-grid permaculture farm at 9000 feet high is living proof that food can be grown nearly anywhere. Managing with a very short growing season and water constraints, she and her interns have created magic. Tour the sun-warmed, insulated greenhouse where greens are grown year-round. It's home to a waterfall and pond with fish, trellises for grapes and seedlings, artwork for the soul, and mushrooms growing from straw. The outside garden offers herbs, berries, greens and prayer flags. Kris sees herself as a steward of the land, and delights in sharing it with kids and interns in a spirit of love and reciprocity.

Agreed. One of the negatives of our online world is that the rush to judge has accelerated. Even mainstream media has, in the rush to publish first, overlooked basic journalistic techniques such as fact checking, confirming sources, etc.

  7. valhala56 says:

Well at the very least the authors of the emails need to publicy defend themselves. Did they intentioanl decieve?
Lets’ get clarity in this matter.

There are a lot of reasons to commit scientific fraud. Unfortunately, it has become quite common. I won’t speculate on the various reasons (desire for recognition seems to be one of them), but it is common enough to know it is more than a funding issue.

I’m very inspired and will try to grow my own mushrooms soon.

    Thanks and greetings from germany

Most of the strategies for mitigating global warming and those for softening the peak oil crash are complementary, if not identical. I don’t think the question of GW being manmade or not is really that important; if it’s going to be a sticking point in usage reduction, let it go. The important thing is to downshift usage of petroleum products.

search for “Hadley CRU Files” and download. Read them and then punch yourself in the stomach for being a fool. After that stop being a fool!

Why do we have to put this carbon back into the earth, will something magic happen if we do? What will happen if we dont?

Fact is that I can live at the same standard as I do today without any substantial dependence on oil of fossil fuels. The system as such will however have to be reformed and my production will be more self oriented then what it is today, no more politicians, no more welfare leaches. If you believe that there will be a nuclear war, what are you doing about it?

  14. valhala56 says:

@snakecharmer the people of earth haveing been burning fossil fuels for over 200 years. The forests are being elimated at the fastest pace ever, More countries are coming online to use fossil fuels, China builds a coal plant a week. How are we going to put all this carbon back in the earth? It’s not going to happen. It will be a huge waste of money & probaly not change much. In the meantime Peak Oil will acclerate Global ecomonic collapse & possibly cause Nuke war. Peak Oil is immediate problem.

  15. valhala56 says:

Until I see the acutal emails myself I just consdider hype. I don’t know any reasons other then getting more funding for the scientific work on why the scientist would commit a fraud. And it it is proven the case then they will lose all funding. I will wait & see, but for me Climate change is a no brainer. the earth has been going through climate change it’s entire lifetime as a planet.

Peak oil will only have the affect you give it, oil is the “only” fuel used for transportation. You can reduce the need of oil by limiting transportation. Fact is that most jobs can be handled from your home, still most people travelling to and from their job. Why is this?

If you reduce the effect need of your appliances you further reduce your need for oil, imagine that your washing machine would take 3hours to wash your clothes instead of ½hour. This would make other means of power usable.

  17. snakecharmer133 says:

What do you say about the latest hacking of the global warming emails? Do these emails change your view in any way?

Human activity itself causes the temperature to rise, compare a city with a farm ~10 miles south and youll understand. Just the warmth of a human can raise the room temperature by 1-2 degrees in a closed room. Imagine what a whole city full of humans would do!

Wow i have really hit a spot there. Always the same when you go up against someones lifetime of preceptions of there reality in a world of lies.. You will see sooner or l8er that this hole thing is a game & is just a huge conspiracy. we dont need oil & the prices change when they want them to, no other reason. Complete control of the ignorant mass’s. Because of my nuckleheadness you lot will not be prepared for the swift change in oil prices.ok.

  19. valhala56 says:

@weAreNotAloneHere, I’m not talking at you as sheeple. Your not sheeple your an idiot. Oil has already “rocketed to the sky” your words, what have you forgotten $4 a gallon gas 2 summers ago? Or how about when they pass Cap n Trade.
The problem with conspiracy types like yourself is not that you are skeptical it’s that you belive everything is a conspiracy.
The Peak Oil data is out there, & because of nuckleheads like you we will not be prepared for Peak Oil.

  20. weAreNotAloneHere says:

Im very awake so dont talk to me like im a sheep.Sheep. Confuse global warming with peak oil ha…yeah right… what you smokin.
Why do u think its gonna sky rocket? because they want it to.
. just remember 1 thing. everything they tell you is a lie.

    Ya man i totally agree.

  24. angelbe88 says:

A lot of great stuff here.

As for the peak oil/global warming, it doesn’t matter really, the greedy parasites would most likely create scarcity anyways. I just listened to the New EU presidents say GLOBAL GOVERNMENT began in 2009 with the G20 meeting. They will be signing a Climate Treaty in December that will solidify it all. This is where we will find the Carbon Tax. If you think it has gotten beyond ridiculous and absurd, you are right. Best To grow some food for what is ahead of us.

  25. yogiudo says:

Definitely a step in the right direction, except that the greenhouse is dependent on cheap oil because it is built with plastic.
