    Bama- one of JD’s …
Bama- one of JD’s friends at the time was driving JD’s motorcycle and was killed in an accident in Aspen- “he lost a friend but kept his memory”- so his friend is forever tied to this song for the ages- he wanted to remember his friend as part of the song. I think the part about the sun is probably a reference to experimental drugs (remember it was the 70′s) but also just the “high” of the sun, mountains, and outdoors.

They use to get “high” (stoned on drugs) in Aspen, Denvers home town – ambiguity in Rocky Mountain “high”. My Scottish pal once stumbled upon his house, and John invited him in, and they played guitars together for half an hour. What a great guy, bursting with love for ALL life – now he’s teaching the angels how to sing. Thanks for posting.

    Saw him in concert …
Saw him in concert in late 70′s. I’m a rockn’roller but i swear it’s the best concert i ever attended. He played with his band for an hour and a half then let the band take a break while just he and his acoustic played for a half-hour. When his band cane back he played for another hour. His give and take with the audience was nothing i’d ever seen before. He truly is a star among stars..

    Sure Whimsy all …
Sure Whimsy all what you write is true. But RCA wasn’t happy w what JD was turning out by the 80′s & JD got busy with his other causes so he didn’t put into his music what he should have. Cold but true in the biz-they are there to make money and JD wasn’t by the 80′s & he needed a break I think from the 70′s. RCA chgd management & JD was on the upswing again by the 90′s & I think JD’s heart was getting back into it- then he went up in his EZ..so we’ll never know the outcome-that’s the hard part.

  22. blackwhimsy says:

    Radiohead,there is …
Radiohead, there is a GREAT site I found yesterday called the John Denver Guitar Research Site. It pictures and describes nearly ALL of the guitars John used throughout his career, from the Guilds to the gorgeous Yamaha with the mother of pearl neck. It describes who made them, the wood chosen etc. Apparently a lot of them are damaged as JD favoured ‘soft’ leather guitar covers. He even had an 18 string guitar! It’s a fascinating site.

  23. blackwhimsy says:

I hope JD went with …
I hope JD went with Sony. The way RCA treated him was positively shameful. He was at 1 time their biggest money-maker since Elvis & the biggest record seller in the WORLD in 1975 and they dropped him?? It was the final indignity after YEARS of poor treatment. They quit promoting his LPs, took his producer Milt Okun away, made him do the Nashville & Disco albums,REJECTED the LP with Perhaps Love on it and refused to let CBS release the duet with Domingo as a single. RCA = Really Crap Abuse.
