This biking trail in Kane County, Illinois is paved for 11 miles. This video shows the rural western half of the trail in Sugar Grove. It’s a great path to bicycle, or for rollerblading, walking and running. From a rollerblading perspective, the Virgil Gilman Trail is relatively accessible. It is paved all but for a very short 1/4 mile section of limestone screenings in a prairie just northwest of KeDeKa Road. The path through Bliss Woods was freshly repaved in 2007. The west half of this bike path in Sugar Grove is uncrowded, but not isolated. You’ll encounter a few friendly people hiking and walking their dogs. It is well maintained and trash is not in sight here. There is ample parking at Waubonsee College, and on Bliss Road at the entrance to Bliss Woods Forest Preserve, and on Galena Blvd. west of Blackberry Farm, to name 3 easily accessible points. On June 28, 2008 we began our bike ride at the western trail head behind Waubonsee College on Route 47 in Sugar Grove, Illinois. Here there are abundant native plant species in the open prairie and wetlands. It is a good place for birdwatching. The biking path continues southeast along Blackberry Creek and deep into Bliss Woods, where you might see deer and owls. The trail then runs adjacent to Bliss Creek Golf Course.
