Climbing Over Rocky Mountain

Wednesday, November 3rd, 2010

Gilbert and Sullivan’s raucous operatic tale is captured in all its fun and glory in this production, recorded live at Central Park’s Delacorte Theater. Kevin Kline sparkles as the swashbuckling and libidinous Pirate King while Linda Ronstadt makes her theatrical debut as the lovely and virginal Mabel. When Mabel and Frederic, a young pirate bound to serve the Pirate King, fall in love, complications arise and high spirited antics ensue. The incomparable cast offers the best in this boisterous romp. Despite some of the technical shortcomings of the DVD I found it more rewarding than the 1983 movie. I would thoroughly recommend adding a copy of this DVD to your library.

Rocky Mountain Sacred Harp Singing Convention (2008)

Wednesday, October 27th, 2010

The Rocky Mountain Sacred Harp Singing Convention for 2008 took place Sept. 27-28 in Albuquerque, NM, at the Anderson-Abruzzo International Balloon Museum. A picturesque setting for this great singing — one of the best this singer has visited this year. The first two songs, “Evening Shade” (209) and “Greenwich” (183), were recorded the first day of the event, and the other two, “Bellevue” (72b) and “Chester” (479), at the start of the Sunday session as singers were still arriving. The songsters present included a good number from New Mexico, Colorado, Arizona and Texas — as well as some from Washington, Oregon, California, Illinois and other states. The Rocky Mountain conventions alternate between Albuquerque and Boulder, Colo., where the 2009 event will be held. See fasola.org under “singings” for further information. Great food was enjoyed at the traditional “dinner on the grounds” both days, including Green Chile Apple Pie. After all, this is New Mexico, Pilgrim!

Rocky Mountain Snowplow Preview

Spectacular Steam action in the Southern Rockies as we enjoy former Rio Grande Rotary Snowplow(OY) on the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad from Chama in 1997….the last year they ran the Rotary. Three 2-8-2′s power the plow train from Chama, up the 4% grade to Cumbres, and beyond. Two camera coverage of this run includes some onboard footage, and access from snowmobiles. Plowing ended with a huge boulder on the tracks, and we see removal in a follow-up video..First Train to Toltec…Copyright 2006. Greg Scholl Video Productions
